During the Covid lockdowns of 2020 the media depictions of a Venice empty of tourists prompted me to revisit my archive of photographs taken over the course of the last 25 years. My planned trip to Venice had been thwarted and with no hope of taking a holiday, out of a sense of frustration and longing, my thoughts turned to reimagining these photographs. This view of Venice is romantic and idealised - everywhere there are traces of human activity but few people are to be seen. This is Venice as a depopulated stage set with its many opulent interiors and layered reflections, its contrasts of light and dark, its sense of mystery and pervasive feeling of melancholy…..
